Enzymes - catalysts of the body

This dietary supplement from ViVe Supplements combines the protein-splitting enzymes bromelain, trypsin and chymotrypsin with the polyphenol rutin.

Most enzymes, also called biocatalysts, are proteins that are mostly formed in the body. If there is a genetic defect, some enzymes may be missing in the body. A typical function of enzymes is, for example, the breakdown of carbohydrates, fats and proteins as part of digestion, but they also perform numerous tasks in metabolism.

Breaking down proteins

When we talk about bromelain, or bromelin, we are talking about an enzyme mixture and not, as is often assumed, a single enzyme. The substance can be extracted from the fruit or the stem of the pineapple.
In the food industry, the enzyme mixture is used as a tenderizer for meat and to clarify fruit juices.

Trypsin is also one of the protein-splitting enzymes. In humans, it is produced in the pancreas and plays an important role in the digestion of proteins.

Chymotrypsin is very similar to trypsin in terms of its function and also comes from the pancreas. The main difference between trypsin and chymotrypsin lies in their substrate specificity, i.e. the peptide bonds that they prefer to cleave. Chymotrypsin prefers aromatic amino acids (e.g. tyrosine, tryptophan, phenylalanine), while trypsin mainly cleaves behind basic amino acids (e.g. lysine, arginine).

Rutoside, also called rutin, belongs to the group of flavonoids and the upper group of polyphenols. In nature, the plant pigment serves plants as an antioxidant and UV protection. Rutin can be found in large quantities in the Japanese pagoda tree, buckwheat, parsley and St. John's wort.
