The fruits of the saw palmetto ripen in autumn. They are dark red to brown in color and have a bitter aroma that takes some getting used to. They were considered an important source of food by the natives of Florida. The oil-rich fruits were not only used as a particularly nutritious part of the diet, but also traditionally for health purposes.
