L-carnitine: Natural protein compound
L-carnitine is a natural protein compound that can be synthesized from the amino acids methionine and lysine in the human organism itself. Vitamin C and vitamin B6 as well as iron and vitamin B3 are also necessary for the body's own carnitine production.
L-carnitine contains sulfur and is formed in the liver and kidneys. It is stored primarily in the heart and skeletal muscles. It can also be taken in through food. A particularly good source of L-carnitine is meat, from which the name of the compound is derived (Latin: caro, carnis = meat). The average adult has around 20 to 25 g of L-carnitine.
